WOMEX is the most important international professional market of world music of every kind, bringing together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Womex presents 32 musical acts on this year’s programme, including renowned Ed Motta from Brazil, Ethiocolor from Ethiopia, and Orkestra Mendoza from United States. As a result of years of dedication, Maarja Nuut is now in the carefully elected circle.
„We are thrilled to announce our first artist from Estonia to take the official WOMEX Showcase stage: Maarja Nuut, the avant-trad fiddle-singer whose passionate calm and solo folk-looping skills so charmed us at Tallinn Music Week, will be joining us in Santiago de Compostela this year. Her presence reflects the growing international interest in artists from the whole Baltic area which is due, in large part, to events such asTallinn Music Week and Viljandi Folk Festival which highlight the musical talent of the region. We are looking forward to welcoming the first Estonian act to WOMEX!“ enthused Ben Mandelson, WOMEX Founding Director
Maarja Nuut's critically acclaimed debut album ‘Soolo’ was released in spring 2013. Her work is inspired by traditional dance tunes and songs that tell stories of the past. Maarja's unique playing style and characteristic sound is greatly influenced by village musicians and dance traditions, while occasionally using loops to create a sound both archaic and modern. In her music, she is searching for a lively and relaxed state similar to a cat that is ready to take off in a moment's notice.
"This state is like an impulse which gives rise to music and makes me want to prolong being in the moment and concentrate, which alters the way of seeing, hearing and perceiving. It is always "now" and old tunes are as fresh as improvisations which were born a second ago," says Maarja about her intimate tales.
Maarja Nuut will be accompanied by Estonian Traditional Music Center delegation and several Estonian folk musicians, among them TMW higlight acts Mari Kalkun, Trad.Attack!, Svjata Vatra, and many others, to introduce the center’s work as well as Estonian music at the Womex trade fair.
WOMEX2014 is taking place on 22-26 October in Santiago de Compostelas, Spain. Maarja Nuut’s showcase takes place at Cidade da Cultura Daycase Stage on Friday 24 October at 14:15.
